— Tamara Gordon, Registered Nurse and Registered Dietitian, UVA Health

I have known Rachel since she graduated from nutrition science school. She has been an absolute standout in every regard. Very early on in her career, Rachel developed a keen interest in helping with nutritional issues in our lung transplant population. Nutritional issues - both obesity and malnutrition - are highly prevalent in this patient population. Additionally, many patients have upper GI disorders related to their underlying lung disease, which often gets exacerbated by the trauma of a long and very invasive surgery inside the chest cavity. Furthermore, interactions with immunosuppressive drugs and other medications need to be taken into account. Rachel has mastered the unique and very complex nutritional challenges of our patients with excellence. She is intellectually curious, but also open minded and self-critical enough to change her practice if the circumstances demand it. But first and foremost, Rachel is an incredibly kind, upbeat and positive individual who approaches nutritional challenges with a great deal of empathy, encouragement, positive reinforcement and persistence. Our patients have greatly appreciated her support, and our entire lung transplant team has just absolutely loved working with her. She is a superstar.
